This travel journal traces a personal journey to Antarctica. For over 30 years Jenny Diski was content to leave the question as to whether her mother was alive or dead unanswered. Not knowing the fate of the violent woman she last saw shortly after her father's death in 1966 filled her with a sense of relief rather than of loss. Then, just as Diski is planning a trip to the dream world of ice "The one truly generous act of my mother's that I could really put my finger on: her leaving me alone," writes Jenny Diski of the woman she has neither seen nor heard from - to her great relief - since 1966, the year of her father's death. Both parents were suicidal, absconding hysterics who would return from mysterious stints away to play bizarre sexual games with their daughter.

Novelist Diski (Monkey's Uncle, 1995 etc.) doesn't like to travel, doesn't like breaks in routine--""indolence has always been my most essential quality""--but an undeniable urge to visit Antarctica swept her along. To start with the positive, Jenny Diski is a superb writer. Perceptive, reflective, gentle, poetic and a great writer about people, places, thoughts, ideas and feelings. And the two books that Skating to Antarctica is composed of are both magnificent and powerful. Jenny Diski, who has died of cancer aged 68, was a writer for whom no subject was taboo. But her memoir Skating to Antarctica (1997) is the most remarkable of her books.

Tillfälligt slut.

Antarctica is not so much a destination as a symptom in this intense, disturbing memoir of a wickedly unpleasant childhood. Novelist Diski (Monkey’s Uncle, 1995 etc.) doesn’t like to travel, doesn’t like breaks in routine—“indolence has always been my most essential quality”—but an undeniable urge to visit Antarctica swept her along.

Skating to Antarctica is not an easy read but it is a consistently engaging one.
